Inspectors say pupils at Waverley Academy attain well and enjoy “warm and positive” relationships with adults.

Waverley Academy is proud to have received an excellent Ofsted report after an inspection in September.

Inspectors praised Waverley for establishing a “calm and orderly environment” where the routines are highly consistent and pupils behave very well.

In their report, the inspectors say that the relationships the children have with adults are warm and positive in this welcoming school.

The Ofsted report says that attendance at Waverley is “high and sustained” and that disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) also attend school very regularly.

The academy is praised for its commitment to inclusion, which is central to the school’s work, with staff knowing vulnerable pupils well and understanding the barriers that may affect their learning or wellbeing.

Waverley’s Early years provision is highlighted, with inspectors noting that children make a very positive start in Nursery and Reception and are happy and settled.

They were pleased to see that a well structured curriculum sees pupils attain well, with many achieving above the national average. Reading is a particular strength at Waverley, with staff developing a passion for reading and immersing pupils in a diverse range of texts.

Following the inspection, Ofsted said that the school is at a strong standard in three of the seven categories assessed – Attendance and behaviour, Early years and Inclusion – and at the expected standard in the other four categories.

The inspection at Waverley was carried out in September under the new Ofsted framework, where schools are no longer given one-word judgements; they are now graded across a range of areas on a five-point scale from ‘exceptional’ to ‘urgent improvement’, with ‘expected standard’ being the new benchmark for high-performing schools.

Danielle Wilby, Principal of Waverley Primary Academy, said: “We are incredibly proud of this strong Ofsted report which reflects how it recognises the calm, orderly and inclusive environment we work hard to maintain at Waverley.

“It was so pleasing that the inspectors saw the warm and positive relationships that we have with our pupils and praised the children for their excellent behaviour.

“I would like to thank all the staff who work so hard every day to make Waverley the successful academy it is and our parents and carers for their ongoing support.”

Rowena Hackwood, CEO of Astrea Academy Trust, said: “It is a great pleasure to read this excellent report from Ofsted and I would like to congratulate Danielle and all the staff and pupils at Waverley Academy.

“As a trust, we are committed to making sure that every child receives a brilliant education and it is wonderful to see the strengths of Waverley showcased and praised in this report.”
