The whole community at St Ivo Academy in St Ives are celebrating as one of their students, Ava, is awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in BBC Cambridgeshire’s ‘Make a Difference Awards’.

Ava was nominated for an award in the ‘Young Hero Award’ category, and judges acknowledged Ava as “a true inspiration and a shining example of the impact the young person can have on their community.” As a young carer, Ava has had her own challenges to face, but “is committed to helping others”, said the judges, as they awarded her second place in the category, with a ‘Highly Commended’ award.

Ava was described as “resilient and selfless” at the BBC Cambridgeshire’s Make a Difference Awards, and regularly volunteers for the Parents and Carers hub, where she gives her time at fundraising stalls. She also supports making food hampers for the families in the community who are the most in need.

Ava said of her recognition:

“I love helping the community because I just want to make sure that people have the correct items everyday. One day, I would like to take over my mum’s business so I can continue a legacy for the business and the community.

“I felt receiving this award means I can continue what I am doing and help those that need that extra support.”

Tony Meneaugh, Principal at St Ivo Academy said:

“We are all really proud of Ava winning such a brilliant award for all the hard work she does, to help people in the community. Well done Ava!”
