Key Stage 1 pupils at Hartley Brook Primary Academy were delighted to lift the winners’ trophy at this year’s Astrea Primary Olympics.
Hartley Brook joined children from the trust’s 17 other primary schools across Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster for the sporting event.
The Astrea Primary Olympics, now in their sixth year, are held every year at the English Institute of Sports Stadium in Sheffield, with over 500 children taking part over two days.
The event is all about teamwork, with pupils from the 18 schools moving around a variety of stations ranging from jumping, running and throwing events, and collecting as many points as they can in the time allowed.
Hartley Brook was very proud to win the Key Stage 1 competition yet again, with Edenthorpe Hall Primary Academy in Doncaster taking second place.
The Key Stage 2 trophy was won by Hexthorpe Academy in Doncaster, with Edenthorpe Hall Primary and Carrfield Primary Academy in Bolton upon Dearne were in joint second place.
Medals and certificates were awarded in a special ceremony at the end of each of the two days, recognising the children’s participation, teamwork and exceptional performance.
Claire Costello, Principal at Hartley Brook Primary Academy, said: “We are absolutely delighted that, once again, our pupils were named Key Stage 1 champions at this year’s Astrea Primary Olympics.
“Throughout the day, the children demonstrated fantastic effort, resilience and encouragement for one another, and they were a credit to our school in every event.
“It was a joy to see their excitement and confidence grow as they competed and we could not be prouder of the way they represented our school.”
Astrea’s PE and School Sports Leader, Stephanie Crowe, said: “Events like the Astrea Primary Olympics give our pupils the chance to showcase the skills they have built throughout the year in high-quality PE lessons and a wide range of extracurricular sporting opportunities.
“Competing at a venue such as the English Institute of Sport is a wonderful experience for pupils and helps them to see themselves in these environments and feel that they belong there.
“This event would not have been possible without the help of the wonderful student sports leaders from Oasis Academy Don Valley, who worked hard scoring and supporting the children throughout the day and we would like to thank them for their patience and support.”
